Letter to the Editor: Condeming Congressman Lawler’s Town Hall

Dear Editor,

Americans should be increasingly concerned as those in power continue to stifle dissension. A case in point: Mike Lawler’s town hall on May 4. Ironically, Lawler began this meeting stating, “This is what democracy looks like.”  Perhaps he just doesn’t understand democracy.

The first step of effective governance is hearing your constituents.  That’s what representative government is all about. But when Lawler’s constituent, Emily Feiner, questioned at what point he’d resist President Trump to defend the constitution, he had her physically removed from the room. He later dismissed her as a “radical far-left activist,” said her words were “insane and offensive” and that “she needs help.”

When name-calling did not quell the anger over Feiner’s ejection, Lawler began claiming that meeting attendees were being physically violent, throwing objects and even punches. If that is the case, where is the evidence? And why were police focused on removing women for speech, rather than for people allegedly putting others in danger?

Mike Lawler is not hearing the anger of his district. He would prefer that you not hear it either; why else would he work so hard to silence and sideline people who disagree with him?

Democracy demands conversation. Representation requires consideration. Town halls should foster dialogue, not monologue. As an elected official, I condemn Congressman Lawler’s handling of his May 4 town hall.
