An Apology from the Historical Society

To the Editor:

The Historical Society, Inc., serving Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown, is holding its annual wine tasting and fund-raiser, the Party on the Porch, on the evening of Friday, September 18.

It has come to our attention that this corresponds with the beginning of Rosh Hashanah and we would like to apologize for that. It was certainly never our intention to offend anyone or dishonor any religious holiday.

We customarily hold the event on the third Friday of September and, as always when scheduling an event, we checked a calendar in order to avoid any conflicts. On this occasion, the calendar in the Historical Society board room clearly states "Rosh Hashanah Begins at Sundown" on Saturday, September 19. (Believe me, I just checked it again.)

Obviously, we will not be relying on that calendar in the future.

Unfortunately, we cannot reschedule the event at this time. Commitments have been made and the announcements have been mailed. We will miss anyone who will not be able to attend because of this and wish them a happy new year. Of course, anyone who would still like to come will be most welcome.

Best regards,
