In honor of Juneteenth, the Briarcliff Ossining Ministerial Association (BOMA), Star of Bethlehem Church, NAACP Ossining, the Ossining Village Juneteenth Council, CSI Briarcliff, and JTC Experiences invite the community to a powerful evening of reflection, history, and shared experience: “The Telling: A Gathering of Remembrance.”
Inspired by the Jewish Passover Seder, The Telling presents a condensed, unified history of African Americans—from slavery to freedom—shared through scripture, storytelling, music, imagery, and a traditional soul food meal. This moving experience highlights both the suffering endured and the enduring faith, resilience, and triumph of a people.
The evening will be led by A.W. Hampton, creator of The Telling and a resident of Montgomery, Alabama, alongside Joyce Sharrock Cole, award-winning Ossining historian.
Special Presentation: Original Juneteenth Play
This year’s program will also feature a 20-minute original play written by Sharrock Cole, bringing to life the pivotal moment of June 19, 1865:
On the evening of June 19, 1865, after a long and exhausting day working in the fields, enslaved Africans on the Early family plantation in Galveston, Texas, retired for the night. An unexpected visitor arrived with news of freedom. Filled with a mix of skepticism and hope, each person was faced with a life-changing decision—what does freedom mean, and what comes next?
