Saturday, September 19th is the kickoff date for the fall session of Greenburgh’s Kids Short Story Connection (KSSC). Sarah Bracey White, Greenburgh’s Arts Director and KSSC’s founder, says that her mission with KSSC is “to nurture the next generation of writers.” A love of writing is the only pre-requisite for joining the workshops.
KSSC meets at Greenburgh Town Hall and over the Zoom platform on six alternating Saturdays with established writers/teachers. Young writers are assigned to workshops according to age and writing levels. This places them in round-table sessions with their creative writing peers. Each workshop has no more than 10 participants which allows enough time for writing and sharing work written during the workshop sessions.
The two in-person workshops for kids 9 to 11 and 12 to 14 meet every other Saturday from 10 am until 12 noon. The Advanced workshop, for writers 14 – 18, meets over Zoom from 1:30 – 3:30 pm. Registration for the six, two-hour workshops is $165; $135 for Greenburgh residents.
Many young writers join KSSC when they’re nine and remain active with the project until they enter college. KSSC teachers marvel at the literary abilities of their young students and take pride in nurturing their growth. Many students first see their work published while still in KSSC workshops.
As KSSC’s manager, White says that she is especially proud when graduates in their 20’s and 30’s return to report how KSSC nurtured their writing skills and gave them a community that helped prepare them to pursue a wide variety of careers where good writing matters. KSSC’s Hall of Fame includes a NYC playwright, and a writer/director whose third independent film premiered at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival.
