For Ilda Sampaio and Paula DaSilva, co-owners of Tarrytown’s Salon 2000, the responsibility for every aspect of their full-service salon has evolved into an enjoyable occupation.

Since purchasing the business in the summer of 2005 both women have attended to every detail in the spirit of cooperation and support not only with each other but to their staff as well.

For Paula DaSilva the business of beauty runs in her family. Her aunt was a hair stylist and from a very young age Paula can remember cutting and braiding the hair on her favorite dolls. At eighteen she got her beautician’s license. She went on to attend Lehman College where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree. Her life after college revolved around teaching Art Education at Roosevelt High School from 8 am until 12:30 pm, and eating lunch in her car on the way to Salon 2000 where she cut and styled hair from 1-9 pm. "There are three kinds of people in this world," Paula is fond of saying. "Those that make things happen, those that wait for things to happen and those that say what happened?" She is definitely in the first category. "I like to be challenged and this business is very hectic with no dull moments," she noted. "As an owner I’m not content to sit back and let others do the work. Ilda and I are involved in everything that happens here," she noted. "You might say that we’re like peanut butter and jelly. We go really well together."

Ilda Sampaio is another high achiever who recently added twins to her busy lifestyle and truly enjoys the rigors of parenting and business ownership. "Right now my family and husband help a great deal with the children," she said. From time to time both of the infants can be seen, in the large and comfortable waiting area of Salon 2000, being doted upon. "I started out in this business as a receptionist with Adam & Eve here in Tarrytown. I then went to John Jay Beauty School and received my license in 1998," she said. "When Adam & Eve closed and Salon 2000 opened up, I started working here, and when Paula and I had the opportunity to buy this business in 2005 it was a simple decision," she added.

Salon 2000 has a value-added component to it. Tanning beds and booths account for a substantial part of the Salon’s business. There are regular tanning beds, intensive beds and even a stand-up tanning booth. Choices that people make are determined by their skin types. The Salon offers single sessions and packages. In addition, the full range of beauty services from head to toe have given clients additional choices which has increased business and given women and men reasons to keep returning. From hair styling, to coloring, prom and wedding up-do’s, hair extensions, massage, ear piercing, and a host of other widely sought after services, the staff at Salon 2000 are kept busy and up-to-date on the latest in beauty application.

Both Paula and Ilda are very thankful to their staff and clients for making ownership very satisfying. They both manage the responsibilities of their personal lives and work with a sense of calm confidence. Coming up on their second anniversary, they continue to re-create an appealing salon experience for new and returning clients.
