Calling Women Cyclists: Velo de Femmes is for You

The Westchester Cycle Club is hosting its fourth annual Velo de Femmes on Sunday, June 7, to build community among women cyclists of all levels — from beginners to experienced riders.

Participants do not need to be club members sign up to enjoy this day of riding and connection.

The event begins and ends in Armonk and is designed to encourage more women to participate in recreational cycling in a welcoming, supportive environment.

“We want women to know that there’s a connection out there for those who are interested in riding,” said Christine Schopen, past president of the Westchester Cycle Club, whose nearly 800 members are about one-third female.

Velo de Femmes draws more than 120 women of varying ages and abilities. When women riders feel comfortable, they are more likely to ride, connect, and build lasting friendships.

“I started cycling a year ago,” said Courtney Simonsen, a new WCC member. “Velo de Femmes being my first group event with the club. I realized that day after seeing all of the women, of all ages and levels, that I was exactly where I was supposed to be.”

Velo de Femmes — which roughly translates to “women’s bike ride” — is an opportunity to meet new friends, build cycling confidence, and discover scenic local routes.

Led by WCC’s experienced ride leaders, all rides will take place on quiet, scenic roads and will be no-drop, meaning no one will be left behind.  Groups may be divided into faster and slower paces to ensure everyone rides comfortably. Rides covering between 14 and 50 miles will take place rain or shine.

The $25 entry fee includes:

  • Catered lunch (wraps, salads, beverages) provided by DeCiccio’s
  • Free Westchester Cycle Club membership for first-time participants who are not already members ($40 value) and renewals through June for former members
  • Pre- and post-ride mechanical support and bike advice courtesy of Bax Cycles
  • Friendly ride leaders and supportive group environment

Rides start and end at the Domes Armonk Sports Club, 205 Business Park Drive, Armonk, next to North Castle Community Park (Intersection of Route 22 & I-684, Exit 3).
