For over 70 wonderful years, the Westchester County Federation of Women’s Clubs has had the immense joy and privilege of empowering women at Westchester Community College (WCC) to pursue and achieve their dreams. What started as a humble beginning has blossomed into a remarkable legacy of transformation!
Since our inception in 1927, our Federation has been passionately committed to uplifting women. For more than seven decades, we’ve channeled that commitment into scholarships that alleviate the financial challenges of pursuing education. Our members firmly believe that by investing in women’s education, we not only uplift individuals but also strengthen families and enrich communities — shaping a brighter future for everyone. The Westchester County Federation of Women’s Clubs has donated more than $200,000 toward scholarships at SUNY WCC over the past 70 years, providing scholarships to more than 200 female students.
These funds represent so much more than numbers; they profoundly change lives. Many of our scholarship recipients are working mothers bravely juggling jobs, childcare, and their studies. Some are first-generation college students navigating unfamiliar territory, often the first in their families to pursue higher education. Others come from immigrant families, working tirelessly to build a better future. These women exemplify determination and resilience; we are honored to help lighten their burdens.
One special experience for us was meeting a nursing student who had received one of our scholarships. She had charged her textbooks to a credit card, aware she would bear the interest burden for months. Receiving our scholarship was a game-changer—she could pay off that debt entirely. It’s incredible how even a small amount of financial relief can make a difference for students striving to balance so much.
We also have inspiring stories like that of Abigail Guzman, a proud recipient of the Federation Scholarship and a first-generation college student at WCC. Abigail’s journey truly embodies the spirit of our mission. Coming from an immigrant family facing financial hardships, she has navigated these challenges others might find insurmountable. Thanks in part to the Federation’s support, Abigail can continue her education with pride, and she’s already planning to transfer to a four-year institution.
Westchester Community College has been an invaluable partner in our mission, ensuring that students receive both the academic and personal support they need to succeed. From essential services like a food pantry to the unwavering commitment of faculty and staff who guide students toward their goals, WCC creates an environment where students can thrive. When these efforts are combined with financial support from organizations like ours, they form a powerful foundation that empowers students to overcome challenges and achieve their dreams.
As we celebrate Women’s History Month, I invite everyone to reflect on the incredible power of education to lift women. The women we uplift today will become tomorrow’s leaders and change-makers. Many, like Abigail, will pay it forward, helping others along the way.
All of us at the Westchester County Federation of Women’s Clubs are moved to have been selected as the Community Service Honoree by the Westchester Community College Foundation. The award will be presented at its aptly named “Transforming Futures Together” Gala on Wednesday, April 30, at Tappan Hill Mansion in Tarrytown. We are delighted to celebrate our shared dedication to students with our partners at WCC.
