Juniors and their families from Lakeland and Walter Panas High Schools had the opportunity to learn more about the college application process and timelines which begin this spring. The panel, which included associate directors of admissions from Manhattan University, the University of Rochester and Binghamton University (SUNY), covered topics from SAT and ACT testing to letters of recommendation to financial aid and campus visits.
“Visits are worthwhile to help understand nuances and differences,” suggests Erica Padilla, regional associate director of admissions at the University of Rochester. “Look for things that will make you feel comfortable and connected.” She also suggested that if a school is far away to visit, consider visiting a similar type of school in the New York area to get a sense of what it would be like. Visiting the chosen campus could come after you are accepted and are narrowing down your choices.
Jose De La Cruz, assistant director of admissions at Manhattan University, told families communication is key throughout the process between students and their parents/guardians. It helps make the decision process go more smoothly.
When asked about giving advice, Craig Broccoli, associate director of admissions at the University of Binghamton (SUNY), said, “Parents should embrace this as an opportunity to create bonding moments with your student. Have some fun experiences along the way.”
Members of the high school guidance team at both high schools are also ready to assist students throughout the process. Shari Heyen, director of school counseling for the Lakeland Central School District, reminded everyone that the counseling team is available throughout the process. “We will meet you where you are at,” she concluded. “We will support you every step of the way.”
