Historic Hudson Valley and the Rockefeller Brothers Fund are pleased to announce the debut of a brand-new tour at Kykuit, the Rockefeller Estate—the first new tour in more than 30 years and the only one to include access to the Rockefeller Playhouse, also known as Abeyton Lodge. Launching August 15, 2025, the Rockefeller Experience Tour offers visitors a more intimate glimpse into the private world of the Rockefeller family, revealing spaces that have never been open to the public before.

Built in 1927 by John D. Rockefeller Jr., the Tudor-style Playhouse served as a private family retreat and hosted generations of Rockefeller gatherings and guests. While many wealthy American families constructed “playhouses” for leisure and entertaining, the history of this one is unique for how it fostered a family connection across the generations. Meticulously preserved, the building remains much as the family kept it throughout the 20th century. The sprawling space includes indoor and outdoor pools, tennis courts, bowling alley, croquet court, card room, and a personal gallery featuring medieval and early Renaissance art.

Over the years, the Rockefeller Playhouse has hosted a wide variety of events, from family Thanksgivings to charity galas. Brooke Astor celebrated her 100th birthday there in 2002, and Governor Nelson Rockefeller held annual parties for hundreds of political supporters. It was also where the Rockefeller brothers first gathered in 1940 to discuss their shared philanthropic vision—which led to the founding of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund.

The Rockefeller Experience Tour also includes a visit to the first floor of Kykuit, the Beaux Arts villa on the estate; the West Terrace, which has expansive Hudson River views; a selection of the estate’s expansive gardens; and John D. Rockefeller’s Golf Room.

Kykuit, the Rockefeller Estate boasts a modern and classical art collection, stunning architecture, and beautifully designed gardens that make it one of the top-rated cultural attractions in the lower Hudson Valley. Visitors to Kykuit learn the story of the Rockefellers, beginning with John D. Rockefeller, founder of Standard Oil, whose business acumen made him the richest man in America in his day. He later became the country’s first significant philanthropist. By his death in 1937, he had given away more than half his fortune through various philanthropic programs.

Capacity is limited for the Rockefeller Estate Tour and advance reservations are strongly recommended. Tickets are $75 for adults and $20 for children ages 10 through 17. Children under 10 are not permitted on the tour. Tickets are available now at hudsonvalley.org.

The new tour launches August 15th and run through Sunday November 9th.  In 2026 it will be on their regular tour calendar from May to November.
