Westchester Parks Foundation (WPF) will celebrate its 48th anniversary at the Parks Are Essential Gala on Wednesday, September 17 at Glen Island Harbour Club in New Rochelle, NY. All proceeds from the event will support WPF’s programs that preserve, enhance, and beautify Westchester County Parks, including Camp Morty and Merriwood Teen Empowerment Camp. Since 2006, more than 5,000 campers have participated in this high-quality, outdoor residential experience designed for underserved youth in Westchester County, at no cost to their families.
The evening will honor the visionary leadership, commitment, and community dedication of U.S. Congressman George Latimer, Osaka Gas USA, and The Capitol Theatre—each of whom has demonstrated strong support for WPF and Westchester’s public parks.
“Westchester Parks Foundation thrives because of dedicated partners who share our vision of vibrant, accessible public parks,” said Seth Mandelbaum, Chair of the WPF Board of Trustees. “This year’s honorees exemplify the leadership, service, and community commitment that make our work possible. Their support helps us strengthen the more than 50 parks, trails, and green spaces that define life in Westchester County.”
2025 Honorees:
Visionary Leadership Award – U.S. Congressman George Latimer
In recognition of his strategic vision, innovative thinking, and exceptional leadership in support of the 18,000 acres and over 50 parks, trails, and open spaces that make up the Nationally Accredited Westchester County Parks system. During his tenure as County Executive, he approved over $300 million in capital projects to enhance local parks. A third-generation Westchester native, Congressman Latimer has spent more than 35 years advancing environmental legislation and funding. Never having lost an election, he has served on the Rye City Council, Westchester County Board of Legislators, New York State Assembly, and State Senate. Prior to his recent election to Congress, he served two terms as Westchester County Executive.
Business Impact Award – Osaka Gas USA
In recognition of their long-standing volunteer efforts and commitment to community sustainability. Osaka Gas USA employees, based out of their White Plains office, have contributed countless hours painting fences, revitalizing flowerbeds, maintaining trails, and planting trees, demonstrating teamwork and a positive spirit. Guided by a mission to utilize natural gas as a sustainable energy source, the company is also committed to supporting local nonprofits and encouraging employees to engage in meaningful volunteer initiatives that amplify their impact.
Community Partner Award – The Capitol Theatre
In appreciation of their #TheCapCares initiative, which unites the music community in service of Westchester Parks Foundation and other local nonprofits. Through food, toy, and clothing drives; park cleanup and planting projects; and fundraising efforts, The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester strengthens neighborhoods and enhances local green spaces. Designed by Thomas Lamb, the historic theatre opened in 1928 and originally hosted orchestras, plays, and films like Casablanca. In the 1960s, it became a psychedelic rock venue before closing in the early 1970s. It reopened in 1983 for plays and later served as a catering hall. In 2012, entrepreneur Peter Shapiro revitalized “The Cap,” reestablishing it as Westchester’s premier rock venue.
