Briarcliff Middle School Celebrates Cultures from Around the World

After a few years’ break, the Briarcliff Middle School International Festival is back and better than ever.

Recently, the school celebrated this vibrant and enriching event that was spearheaded by Johanna Foster and Ali Mazza, and which highlighted many cultures that are represented at the school and beyond.

Each grade visited the festival during one class period, beginning in the Little Theater, where a series of cultural dance performances showcased the global diversity of the school community.

Sixth-grader Isabella Rojas Forsea who performed a Russian ballet variation, “Fairy Doll,” from “La Boutique Fantasque” by Rossini.

“I have been dancing ballet since I was one year old,” she said.

English Language Arts teacher James Ryan performed Irish step dancing and invited students to join him on stage to learn a few steps.

Eighth-graders Devna Chandra and sixth-grader Dhilan Shetty performed a traditional Indian dance.

Eighth-graders Monica Sesti and Leila Parandian lead a high-energy Zumba routine, inspired by dance styles from Colombia.

After the performances, students entered the cafeteria, where the true festival atmosphere came alive.

A special guest performance featured Sophia Jan, a fifth grader from Hackley School, who danced a traditional Chinese ribbon routine. Sophia, who studies at Mei Dance Studio, practiced the piece for over a year and regularly performs in local community events.

Afterwards, students explored 24 country-themed booths, each designed and led by middle school students, Briarcliff High School World Language Club members and several teachers. Each display included hands-on activities, cultural artifacts, fun facts and personal connections.

Booths featured interactive experiences, such as making bookmarks, kicking a soccer ball, and even trying on a Roman toga.

Several staff members also participated; Bob Iovino presented about Italy, Georgie Meggyes shared about Hungary and James Ryan presented about Ireland.

The high school club members’ presentations included French Club members, who presented on France, Spanish Club members, who covered a variety of Spanish-speaking countries, and students from the Mandarin and Latin World Language classes, who prepared interactive cultural activities.

Students enjoyed the event:

“I loved the festival and the dance performances,” said Camilla, a seventh grader. “I got a bracelet from the Brazil presentation. You make three knots and three wishes – one for each knot. You wear it until the wishes come true!”

“I liked the presentation about soccer players who had a tough childhood,” said Arber, another seventh grader. “It showed what life was like for them in places like Africa and South America. I also enjoyed the presentations about China, Hungary, and South Korea. I’d love to visit South Korea based on the photos.”

Ms. Foster was pleased with the event’s success.

“The International Day was an unforgettable celebration of cultures from around the world,” she said. “It was wonderful to see our amazing students showcasing their talents with vibrant cultural dances, stunning artwork and engaging hands-on activities. Their enthusiasm, creativity and hard work truly made the day magical.”

Ms. Foster and Ms. Mazza’s thoughtful planning and dedication brought this multicultural experience to life in a way that was both educational and fun for students and staff alike,” said Principal Amy Gladstone. “Thanks to their leadership—and the enthusiastic participation of students, teachers, and community members—the International Festival was not only a day of learning, but a powerful celebration of unity, diversity, and pride in our global heritage.
