Tres Brujas Productions and Molly Canu present the premiere of It’ll Be Fine, an original play by Canu, at Bethany Arts Community beginning September 25. Following two public readings with State of Play Productions, the production marks the play’s first fully staged presentation.
In It’ll Be Fine, Julie and Jake, two friends that grew up together in a small town in upstate NY, move to the city after falling in love and begin planning their lives together. But when their childhood best friend dies by suicide as they prepare for their wedding, the couple is forced to confront grief, identity, and the new uncertainty of the future they imagined together.
“I was moved to write ‘It’ll Be Fine’ to process some of the grief I had experienced as a young adult and to explore how it affects relationships and life’s biggest decisions,” said Canu. “As much as this is a story about two people navigating love, it is also very much a story about how difficult it is to love when you are weighed down by grief. If there is one thing I hope I’ve done right, it’s to create a story that audiences can connect to, see a little bit of themselves in, and leave believing that it will truly be fine.“
Canu is a playwright, storyteller, and producer whose work explores family, identity, and the beautiful mess of being human. Raised in the Adirondacks and now based in Tarrytown, she often finds herself telling stories throughout Westchester and NYC, occasionally acting, and passionately writing about the unexpected turns that shape our lives. Her work has been recognized by the London Independent Story Prize and performed at Bethany Arts Community, Elmwood Playhouse, and Maker’s Central. When she isn’t pursuing creative endeavors, she owns and operates the Fit Inn in Tarrytown and is the mother of two boys.
It’ll Be Fine explores themes of grief, loss, and healing. Audience discretion is advised due to discussions of suicide.
