Kindergartners at Dows Lane Elementary School have been developing foundational music skills, such as steady beat, singing voice, listening and ensemble participation as part of their lessons with music teacher Genevieve Lotze.

During a recent lesson, they practiced the “Moving Up Song,” which they will perform at the third grade moving up ceremony, alongside their fellow Dows Lane students. The ceremony celebrates each grade level’s growth throughout the year and readiness to move on to the next grade.

“The kindergarten students sing about key parts of The Irvington Way, including engaging in learning through the alphabet, shapes and colors, while also building new friendships,” Lotze said. “Their verse looks ahead with excitement to first grade and highlights the importance of community.”

In keeping with The Irvington Way, the students have been learning that music is a powerful form of communication that brings people together.

“By exploring how communities and cultures around the world use music to celebrate important moments, students experience how collaboration, respect and joyful participation help strengthen a sense of belonging within both the school community and the wider world,” Lotze said.
