Bethany Arts Community proudly announces the world premiere of The Spirit of Truth, an evocative stage play that unveils a lesser-known yet transformative chapter in the life of American icon Sojourner Truth. Written by acclaimed playwright Samuel Harps, commissioned by Bethany Arts Community, and meticulously researched by historian Joyce Sharrock Cole, this compelling production is directed by Mel Hancock.
Performances will take place on the last weekend of February and the first weekend of March 2025, as part of Bethany Arts Community’s Black History and Culture Exhibit: Eyes Wide Open.
The Untold Story of Sojourner Truth
The Spirit of Truth takes audiences beyond the familiar narrative of Sojourner Truth as a suffragist, abolitionist, and the first Black woman to successfully sue a white man in court. The play delves into a pivotal yet rarely discussed period of her life in the 1830s, when Truth—then known as Isabella Van Wagenen—lived in the village of Sing Sing (now Ossining, NY).
Amidst a web of radical ideologies, lies, adultery, and murder, Truth’s involvement with the enigmatic Prophet Matthias and his Zion religious cult becomes a crucible for her spiritual and personal transformation. From these trials, she emerges as the fearless preacher, activist, and icon whose voice reshaped American history.
A Collaboration Rooted in Local History
This groundbreaking production is the result of extensive research into Black history in Ossining, led by Ossining Village Historian Joyce Sharrock Cole. Her meticulous exploration of local archives brought to light the fascinating intersection of Truth’s life and the unique history of Ossining.
“We are thrilled to bring this story to life on stage,” said Cole. “It’s a powerful reminder of how the histories of ordinary places intersect with extraordinary people like Sojourner Truth. Her time in Ossining was instrumental in shaping the figure we revere today.”
Playwright Samuel Harps was commissioned to weave this narrative into a gripping drama that captures both the historical and human elements of Truth’s journey. “Clearly one of the most remarkable stories I’ve been a part of. Joyce Sharrock Cole’s meticulous research has brought depth and clarity to the Spirit of Truth. Exploring the life of one of our most iconic figures on her journey to becoming Sojourner Truth has been a transforming experience…” said Harps.
Please be advised, this production is meant for mature audiences only. Suggested for audiences 18+. Includes mature language and themes of sex and violence.
