Join Sing Sing Prison Museum (SSPM) educators for a walk along the Hudson River and into an exclusive area of the Sing Sing Correctional Facility on Sink or Sing: A Walking Tour about Crime, Punishment, Labor, and the Hudson River Region. These unique tours dive into Sing Sing’s past and present, as well as the way US carceral philosophies are impacted by many intersecting issues and ideas. The tour ends with a reflective art making project, led by a person who is justice-impacted, to view participants’ individual experiences through a new lens. Tours run the last Saturday and Sunday of every month at 10 AM, 12 PM, 2 PM and 4 PM, with upcoming tours on May 30 and May 31.

The tour is designed to captivate and educate participants aged 12 and older, offering a unique blend of walking, learning, discussing, and reflection in a stunningly beautiful location. “I was particularly impressed with the humanistic nature of the tour and the personal experiences the guides shared with us; they offered a different viewpoint than the preconceived one I came with,” shares one tour participant.” Another visitor remarked, “I believe the activity at the end of the tour was super eye-opening. We traveled with our three nieces who are 16, 15, and 13. We have toured multiple prisons and when we left they all said, ‘It was different, but good different.’ It was educational, and I think what you have is unique and special. I hope everyone else who has the honor of taking this tour feels the same way.”

Explore the history of the Hudson River region, from indigenous culture to the renowned Hudson River School of Art to the bustling port community and the imposing walls of the Sing Sing Correctional Facility. Highlights of the tour include:

  • Learning about the quarrying of Sing Sing marble
  • Uncovering the origins of U.S. penal philosophy and design
  • Understanding the labor that built Sing Sing and the products developed within its walls
