Sixth graders at Irvington Middle School recently showcased their creativity, research skills and historical knowledge through an interactive museum project focused on the achievements of ancient civilizations they studied this year.
The students, who worked individually and in groups, researched the Colosseum, the Great Pyramid of Egypt, the Great Wall of China, the Parthenon, the Roman Aqueducts, the Terracotta Army and the Ziggurat of Ur. They explored how these achievements shaped ancient societies and continue to influence the world.
“We are incredibly proud of the students’ hard work, teamwork and presentation skills,” social studies teacher Carol LaBella said. “Their interactive exhibits reflected not only a deep understanding of ancient civilizations but also the critical thinking, communication and research skills that will serve them well in the future.”
The interdisciplinary project was made possible through a collaboration between LaBella, librarian Dr. Lovetta James and Instructional Innovation Coach Dr. Stephanie Peborde-Burke. Throughout the process, the students learned how to conduct research, using books, databases and online encyclopedias, while practicing important digital citizenship skills.
“They then transformed their research into engaging museum exhibits that used their recorded voices and presentations designed to teach their peers about the historical significance and lasting impact of these ancient achievements,” LaBella said. “They created a visual representation of their achievement and connected it to a Makey Makey to make it interactive. Students played the role of museum docents, where they had group representatives guide other student visitors through their interactive museum exhibit during a gallery walk.”
