Westchester County has once again been recognized as a Bronze Certified Climate Smart Community by New York State, acknowledging ongoing efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and prepare for the impacts of climate change.
Through the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation’s Climate Smart Communities program, local governments are evaluated on actions that promote sustainability, improve energy use and strengthen resilience. Westchester County’s recertification reflects continued progress in implementing initiatives that support both environmental goals and the long-term needs of residents.
Westchester County Director of Energy Conservation and Sustainability Peter McCartt said: “This is the result of steady work across the County and strong partnerships at the local level. We are focused on making practical improvements that reduce emissions and help communities adapt, while continuing to look for new opportunities to build on that progress.”
The County’s sustainability efforts include improving energy efficiency in public facilities, supporting renewable energy projects, and advancing planning efforts that address climate risks such as flooding and extreme weather. By continuing to invest in these areas, Westchester County is working to reduce long-term costs and improve environmental outcomes.
