Friends of Music Concerts presents the Dover Quartet with Roberto Díaz, Viola

Friends of Music Concerts continues its 71st season with the Grammy-nominated Dover Quartet, with Roberto Díaz, viola, on Sunday, Oct. 6 at 3:00 p.m. at Sleepy Hollow High School in Sleepy Hollow. Directions are here.

Named one of the greatest string quartets of the last 100 years by BBC Music Magazine, the Dover sprang into prominence when it swept all prizes at the 2013 Banff International String Quartet Competition, and won grand and first prizes at the Fischoff Chamber Music Competition.

The group was formed in 2008 at Philadelphia’s renowned Curtis Institute of Music and is currently in residence there. Diaz is the president and CEO of the Curtis Institute, and a violist of international reputation.

The concert program includes:

  • Mozart’s Quartet in D major, K. 575, a mature masterpiece that expresses an optimistic and playful character,
  • Dvořák’s Quartet in F major, Op. 96, nicknamed “American,” contains echoes of African-American and American Indian themes, demonstrating the composer’s admiration for music indigenous to the New World,
  • Díaz joins the Dover for Mendelssohn’s String Quintet in B-flat major, Op. 87. All five instruments are given equal voice in the quintet, which is marked by a restless energy.

All audience members are invited to a light post-concert reception to meet the artists. The reception is sponsored by FOMC Marketing and Communications Director Solange De Santis.
