Letters to the Editor

Ed.: On October 7th, Irvington voters approved a $4,600,000 School Referendum which included an artificial turf field. 1,095 “ Yes Votes” — 945 “No Votes”

While we are disappointed by the outcome of the vote, the record voter turnout demonstrated strong opinions on both sides.   Key objectives have been achieved.  We have created community awareness of the high cost, environmental impact and long term implications of artificial turf.  We continue to remain optimistic that social responsibility will ultimately prevail and that Irvington voters will recognize the merits of investing in state-of-the-art natural grass athletic fields  as they are cost effective, environmentally sustainable and best for children’s health and well-being.

The Bond Referendum authorizes installation of artificial turf on Meszaros field and natural grass on East Field.   It is our expectation that these projects will be executed with excellence and that the School District will assure that these fields will be maintained and nurtured appropriately for years to come.  We support renovation of all remaining athletic fields – with natural grass.  Irvington is a unique and exceptional Hudson River Valley Town. Let’s keep Irvington naturally green – it is best for our community and for generations to come.
