Letter to the Editor: Why I’m Running to be a Sleepy Hollow Trustee

Meghan Raderstrong

Election season is underway and I wanted to introduce myself: I am Meghan Raderstrong and I am running for the Sleepy Hollow Board of Trustees. I’d like to share a bit more about myself and why I hope to earn your vote on November 3rd.

I grew up in the town of Mount Pleasant and decided to move back home over a decade ago. My husband and I chose to live in Sleepy Hollow because we knew we would be raising our family in a place where we not only know our neighbors, but where we all look out for each other. Sleepy Hollow has the kind of community engagement that so many other places lack. It’s hard to go a block in this town without running into someone I know. It’s why I love where we live.

I have worked as an elementary educator for over 15 years, starting as a classroom teacher and then training to become a reading specialist. I currently teach in White Plains as an English as a New Language teacher supporting students who are learning to speak, listen, read, and write in English.

Our kids are now 5 and 8, and we have gotten them as involved in the community as much as we can. If we’re not at home, you can probably find us on the soccer field or at Master Yoo’s taekwondo studio (my oldest is on a quest to earn his blackbelt). My husband and I teach Sunday School at the Dutch Reform Church, and I’ve been a class parent at JP, Morse, and now Washington Irving. I volunteer because I love to, but I also appreciate that I am able to show my kids what building a community looks like.

I also serve as secretary and a volunteer ambulance driver with the Sleepy Hollow Ambulance Corps. I began driving for the ambulance several years ago and saw firsthand how important this service is for our village. We have an amazing group of people who volunteer with the ambulance corps and the three fire companies in our village. However, here in Sleepy Hollow and across the state, too few people are volunteering and our local institutions are suffering because of it.

I decided to run for trustee to help reinvigorate our local service institutions. I hope you will not only vote for me but step up and volunteer in our community however you can. I am going to make connecting residents to our local service institutions a high priority during my time as trustee. As you can tell by all the tourist activity this time of year, Sleepy Hollow has captured the world’s attention. We now need to harness that attention to keep building a community we all want to live in—and that means each of us doing our part.

Please vote on Nov 3rd for me and my fellow TAG candidates Rodolphe Boulanger and Patrick Sheeran. Together we can make our community in Sleepy Hollow even stronger.
