Letter to the Editor: Support for McGoey for Greenburgh Town Supervisor

To the editor:

If you favor term limits in government, please join me in supporting Democratic candidate Barry McGoey for Greenburgh Town Supervisor. An experienced municipal leader with more than three decades of service in government operations, budgeting, labor relations, and public administration, Barry McGoey supports term limits for the Town’s elected officials.

Once elected, Barry intends to adopt a 12-year limit on consecutive terms for the Town Supervisor and Town Council members. Regrettably, our current Town Supervisor has been in office for almost four decades and can’t see that a fresh perspective and current skills would better serve Greenburgh.

While good things have happened in Greenburgh during his tenure, too often they seem to have occurred despite the incumbent’s reign. We unquestionably need change, now. January’s independent forensic report by EFPR Group’s CPAs (https://www.greenburghny.com/DocumentCenter/View/15854/Forensic-and-Financial-Performance-Review-of-2020-2023-Services-for-the-Town-of-Greenburgh-New-York) reveals why we need competent executive leadership for the “effective stewardship of public resources.” We must not continue to suffer from the current weaknesses and deficiencies, including failures to file tax liens, assess and collect mandated fees and penalties on past due taxes, or allow further escalation of healthcare buyout incentives. There’s much more, to the tune of $100 million in the aggregate.

Over 34 years the Town’s population has more than doubled; while the incumbent supervisor continues to have a penchant for constituent relations, the job has become so much bigger than that. The incumbent is either ill-suited for his role as the Town’s chief fiscal officer, or he has become complacent. In contrast, Barry McGoey’s experience in local government and his accounting, labor negotiation, and legal skills make him the better candidate for Town Supervisor. Term limits incentivize elected officials to achieve their goals within a reasonable period. Turnover in leadership encourages greater innovation, responsibility, and productivity.

In 2020, a term limit was instituted by our Democratic county executive, for himself and future county executives. Similarly, our Westchester County legislators operate under term limits. There is every reason to make sure that Greenburgh is also subject to reasonable term limits.

Please vote for Barry McGoey in the primary election on June 23 to bring this policy and other needed improvements to Greenburgh. Early voting begins June 13.

Sincerely,

Jill Rembar
