I’m writing to share why I believe Beth Davidson is the right choice in this Democratic primary for Congress and it comes down to one word, or rather one acronym: SALT.
Beth Davidson is the only candidate in this race who has made “restoring the full SALT deduction to ease the tax burden on local homeowners” a stated priority. It’s the first bullet point under her first listed issue, “tackling the affordability crisis” because she understands what it actually costs to live here.
The SALT deduction has existed since the very first federal income tax in 1913. For most of its history, there was no cap. Americans could deduct the full amount they paid in state and local taxes from their federal return. In 2017, Donald Trump capped that deduction at $10,000. The result, for many of us, was a significant increase in our federal tax bill.
Mike Lawler will hit the campaign trail days after June 23rd celebrating raising the SALT cap to $40,000 from $10,000 as his crowning achievement. And it is, because he’s done nothing else, but be a rubber stamp for Trump’s bad ideas.
Lawler’s deal also comes with a catch: the increased cap sunsets in 2029. Without further action, families in this district revert to the $10,000 limit.
Given this administration’s track record, assuming that won’t happen sooner would be a mistake.
Back to Beth.
She wants to restore the full SALT deduction, not just raise the measly cap. And I have no doubt that she will fight for this restoration to be permanent.
That’s why we need Beth Davidson as our advocate.
The only duly elected legislator in this primary race who has a history of successfully championing and passing bi-partisan legislation in Rockland County that has eased the tax burden for her constituents, notably seniors, veterans, and volunteer first-responders.
Just this month the gas tax cap that Beth fought for has been enacted, bringing down prices at the pump for all of Rockland’s commuters.
I could give a host of reasons why I personally endorse Beth.
She is genuine and kind.
She remembers your face and your story after meeting you just once.
She has the experience and grounded demeanor to lead during this moment of absolute chaos.
Even if none of that moves you, consider this: she will make it more affordable to live in this district.
That’s what she’s done locally, and that’s what she’ll fight for in Washington.
