As a tax professional for many years, I have worked with clients across the Hudson Valley and have seen firsthand how tax policy affects everyday families. I have also seen how partisan politics can make life more difficult for families struggling to make ends meet.
The extension of key provisions from the 2017 tax reforms, particularly the larger standard deduction, has simplified filing for the majority of taxpayers. The One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA), passed in July 2025, made these increases permanent and added further inflation adjustments, making the standard deduction far more beneficial than itemizing for most filers.
Critics, however, argue that provisions of the OBBBA will reduce critical benefits for families who need them most. In response, Congressman Mike Lawler introduced the bipartisan Increasing Nutrition Access for Seniors Act in August 2025, which would simplify the SNAP application process for seniors and individuals with disabilities. This is yet another example of Congressman Lawler reaching across the aisle to do what is right for New Yorkers.
Stability in the tax code also allows families and small businesses to plan ahead rather than brace for sudden changes. Tax policy works best when it is clear, predictable, and supportive of economic growth. Extending these provisions accomplishes that, and Congressman Lawler deserves credit not only for fighting to put money back in our pockets, but also for demonstrating bipartisan leadership on issues important to Hudson Valley families who need him most.
