Letter to the Editor: Greenburgh Appoints New Town Judge from Tarrytown

The Greenburgh Town Board voted on Wednesday, May 28 to appoint Lia Rodriguez of Tarrytown as Greenburgh’s next Town Judge. Judge-designee Rodriguez will assume her new job on July 7th. Judge Bonnie Orden announced plans to retire from the bench- creating a vacancy on the court.

Judge-designee Rodriguez will be the second Hispanic Judge in Greenburgh history. Walter Rivera, now a State Court of Claims Judge, was the first.

Ms. Rodriguez has lived in Tarrytown for the last 11 years. She is supervising attorney at the Leagal Aid Society Criminal Defense Practice Trial Division with 20 years as a public defender and trial lawyer in the Bronx.  She has also focused time addressing the needs of the indigent-those with food and housing insecurity. She is a former Board member of New Yorkers Against Gun Violence and has been active in national lobbying campaigns with the Brady campaign.  She served as a Judicial Clerk for Circuit Court Judge Rex Barbas in Tampa, Florida at the start of her legal career and even worked for Ambassador Bill Richardson at the United States Mission to the United Nations.

A graduate of Florida State University College of Law in Tallahassee Florida and the University of Michigan, Judge Designee Rodriguez has two children – a sixth and 5th grader who attend Sleepy Hollow Middle School and Washington Irving Intermediate School.

I believe that Lia Rodriguez will be an exceptional Judge. The appointment by the Town Board is for a term that ends on December 31, 2025. She is running unopposed in Novembe for a four year term -having secured the Democratic nomination earlier this year.
