John D. Rockefeller Jr. and His Encounters with Gothic Sculpture

Dr. Charles Little, curator emeritus at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, will present a lecture and tour exploring the Gothic sculpture collection at The Pocantico Center’s Abeyton Lodge.
John D. Rockefeller Jr. was deeply interested in Gothic art, purchasing a large collection of medieval and early Renaissance objects from George Grey Barnard in 1916. Barnard was a renowned sculptor himself, who knew Kykuit’s architect, William Welles Bosworth, and had already been commissioned by Rockefeller in 1915 to carve several marble sculptures for the property.
In 1925, Rockefeller helped facilitate the creation of The Cloisters museum in northern Manhattan. During the process, he donated many of the items acquired from Barnard to form the museum’s core collection, except for a small selection of sculptures that remain at Abeyton Lodge (formerly known as the Playhouse). This special tour offers the first opportunity to explore in detail the pieces Rockefeller kept and examine their place in history.
