The Luckiest Boy in The River Towns

Quil and his clovers

What began as an ordinary May day in his backyard turned into a streak of luck for 9-year-old Quilan Cradler-Williams when he stumbled upon a treasure trove of four-leaf clovers. Widely considered a symbol of good luck, four leaf clovers are notoriously hard to find– but not for Quil.

The Tarrytown resident had been in his backyard pretending he was the luckiest boy alive when his fantasy became reality. Within 20 minutes, Quil had found three four-leaf clovers and two five-leaf clovers. According to the Fort Worth Botanic Garden, finding a four-leaf clover is a 1 in 5,076 chance, meaning that Quil has been extremely lucky in the amount of clovers he’d found.

“It felt pretty good,” said Quil. “Because finding a clover is so rare.”

But Quil’s luck didn’t stop there. On a whim, he bet his older brother, Oliver, that he could find a four-leaf clover in under a minute. Quil found one in 32 seconds. Skeptical, Oliver challenged him to do it again. This time, Quil found a five-leaf clover in just 16 seconds.

Over the course of a month, Quil has found over 13 four-leaf clovers and three five-leaf clovers. To preserve his findings, Quil presses his clovers and places them in a picture frame. “Every time I find a new clover I get excited,” Quil said.

Wishing to test just how lucky he was, Quil suggested buying a few lottery tickets. His grandma overheard and proposed he wait until he found another five-leaf clover to make sure his luck was still intact. Quil, determined to test his luck, ran outside. He was back inside a minute later, a five-leaf clover clutched in his hand.

Quil’s mother brought him to the nearby 7-Eleven, where Quil used his own money to buy the scratch-off lottery tickets. In a stroke of luck, which isn’t unusual for the boy, Quil got all the money he spent on the tickets back.

For those interested in finding their own four-leaf clovers, Quil suggests “you keep your mind on something else […] and keep your eyes on the ground.” He thinks that the harder you try and find the clovers, the more they’ll evade you– it needs to be a happy accident.

“The adventure isn’t over,” Quil said with a smile. “I’m still looking for clovers.”
