Michaels Craft Store Opens in Yorktown

Michaels craft store celebrated its grand opening on Saturday at the Yorktown Green shopping center.

The national retailer opened in a long-vacant Kmart at 335 Downing Drive in Yorktown Heights. The new location includes a custom framing business, a balloon bar expected to open in the coming weeks, and a fabric department expected to open later this year.

Michaels joins a lineup of new businesses that are reinvigorating a key commercial hub and turning Yorktown Green into a vibrant destination.

“We are taking blight and making it bright in Yorktown. We’re getting all our commercial spaces filled,” said Yorktown Supervisor Ed Lachterman during a ribbon cutting ceremony.

Michaels is in the same former Kmart building where Five Below opened in February and T.J. Maxx opened in November. A pickleball sports center expects to open there in late August or early fall.

The shopping center began its revival in 2022 when Uncle Giuseppe’s Marketplace moved into a former Food Emporium that was vacant for 10 years. Founded in 1973, the Irving, Texas—based Michaels has more than 1,300 stores in 49 U.S. states and Canada.
