Two Area Farmers Markets Open on Saturday, May 25th

Down to Earth Farmers Market LogoDown to Earth Farmers Markets, the company with 22 years of experience managing farmers markets in Westchester County and beyond, is excited to begin the 14th Season of Patriot’s Park Down to Earth Farmers Market. The market opens on Saturday, May 25th, and will run every Saturday through November 23rd, from 8:30 am to 1:00 pm. The market is named after its beautiful location: Patriot’s Park, off of Route 9, where Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow meet.

This year the market organizers plan to expand their popular tasting program in support of their 2013 theme, “For the Love of Taste!” Throughout the season, all are invited to visit the Market Manager’s tent for a creative take on the highlighted taste of the month. They will also give out free recipes for the market’s seasonal offerings. The vendors’ tables change as the weeks go by, and so will the recipes. “For the Love of Taste” is a celebration of fresh, real food.

down to earth farmers marketDown to Earth Markets, formerly known as Community Markets, changed its company name in the fall of 2012. In their words, the purpose of the company’s rebranding was “to affirm our commitment to the true source of our food: the earth.” In the rebranding process, they also defined the company’s vision of creating “a strong regional food system, built by independent farms and food businesses, that provides everyone with an alternative to industrial food.”

This is a vision they have been acting on since the early 1990s, when Miriam Haas started the Ossining Farmers Market. This year, twenty-two years after its beginning, Ossining’s Down to Earth Farmers Market, became a year-around weekly food event. It takes place every Saturday, from 8:30 am to 1:00 pm, at the corner of Spring and Main Streets in downtown Ossining.

Both of these farmers markets feature seasonal produce from regional farms, as well as pasture-raised meats and poultry, fresh fish, artisanal breads, delicious baked goods, eggs, locally-made specialty products, brine-soaked pickles, and much more. Each market also has a long-standing roster of beloved vendors and new vendors for the 2013 season.
