Spring Sports Season Begins at Briarcliff High School

We don’t want to jinx it, but it’s finally starting to feel like spring and the Bears are enjoying being outdoors and spending time doing what they love most – practicing their sports.

The Track & Field Team has had an outstanding year and hopes to carry that momentum.

“It has been a phenomenal year for us,” said James Tlsty, spring track co-head coach. “We have 85 athletes, and it’s a very diverse team. In the beginning of the season, we had everyone write down their goals to see what they personally wanted to achieve this season, whether it’s jumping to a certain height, or running a certain time. Overall, they have been very motivated to pursue their goals, and it has been awesome to watch, as a coach.

“We had a great end to the winter season, sending students to nationals, and we are very happy with their performance. They are using that momentum to carry into a great spring season,” he added.

The team is especially looking forward to traveling to Philadelphia at the end of April.

“We will attend the Penn Relays at the University of Pennsylvania, so that will be fun, plus we will hopefully continue to send athletes to state championships. We’re very hungry, very motivated, and luckily, we have a team of people who are very bought-in,” he said.

According to co-head coach Karen McCarthy, the Varsity Boys Tennis Team is also hoping to use momentum.

“We are looking to capitalize on last year’s phenomenal run to the NY State Tennis Championships,” she said. “Captain Charlie Martin, a senior, who is currently ranked 3rd in the USTA Boys U18 Southern District of Eastern rankings and 83rd in the National rankings, will be leading the charge with a solid team of highly motivated teammates ready to defend our title of League Champs. We are looking forward to another exciting and memorable season of tennis.”

Coach McCarthy is joined this year by co-head coach Colin Roller, a pro at Sleepy Hollow Country Club and the assistant coach of the school’s squash team.

The Varsity Girls Lacrosse Team has a lot to look forward to this season.

“We have a balanced team this year: an eighth grader, a few freshmen, three experienced seniors; it’s a really solid group,” said head coach Dan Perito.

Senior co-captain Georgina Janos, who plays attack, has been on the team since she was a freshman.

“I’m looking forward to seeing how this team does this year,” she said. “We do a lot of team-building activities, like team dinners before the games, just to hang out together. We’re all really good friends with each other.”

The Boys Varsity Baseball Team also has a lot of team dinners on the calendar.

“We have seniors, juniors and a lot of sophomores, and everyone gets along,” said junior Lucas Martinez, who plays shortstop and pitcher. “We do team dinners after every practice.

I’m really looking forward to the season, we have a good chance to make the section championship.”

Marc Medico, who is coaching the Junior Varsity Softball Team for the second year, is also optimistic.

“We’re looking good,” he said. “We have a lot of eighth graders in whom I have a lot of confidence, and a lot of veterans came back. We have a lot of talent, so I am looking forward to the season. I like building their confidence and their game. My hope is that they will continue on to varsity and do well – that makes me very happy as a coach.”

“As the spring season begins, excitement is building as our students prepare to take the field, court and track,” said Athletics Director Chris Drosopoulos. “With a strong core of student-athletes, dedicated coaching staff, and a renewed sense of energy, the Bears are poised for a rewarding spring season.”
