Lakeland High School inducted the Athletic Hall of Fame honorees into the 2025 Hall of Fame as part of a half-time ceremony during the Lakeland-Yorktown football game on Sept. 26, 2025. The honorees include field hockey standout Julianna Cappello ‘19 and the 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2019 Field Hockey teams. Lakeland lost to Yorktown with a score of 41-7.
Julianna Cappello ‘19 left her mark playing field hockey at Lakeland High School, where she played on three NY State Championship teams, and Quinnipiac University.
Scoring three goals at Lakeland in one of the team’s State Championship Games, Cappello, who served as captain for a year, notched more than 40 goals in a single season. A Con Ed Player of the Week, she was also Westchester Putnam Player of the Year and earned a NYSPHSAA MVP Award. Off the field, Cappello was a member of the National Honor Society and the National Italian Honor Society.
Two-time captain while playing at Quinipiac, Cappello holds the record for most goals in a season as a rookie. Earning her MBA, also at Quinnipiac, Cappello now works as a medical education manager at Arthex Westchester. She educates doctors on how to use technology instruments for orthopedic surgery.
The Lakeland Girls Field Hockey teams of 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2019 all NY State Championship teams, also held their League, Section and Regional titles. Coached by current coach Sharon Sarsen, the 2015 and 2017 teams held perfect records. The 2016 team wrapped up their season with a record of 22-0-2 and 2019 held a record of 20-1-1.
Sarsen is a member of several Hall of Fames, including the New York State Public High School Athletic Association, the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Hall of Fame, the Westchester Sports Hall of Fame and the SUNY Cortland C-Club Hall of Fame.
