Judith Shangold: 1948-2026

Judith Shangold

Judith Shangold was a member of the Ossining Senior Center since 2023. We met when we found ourselves sitting at the same table. As we talked, she told me that she was a writer and producer for NBC News. I informed her that we shared the love of writing as I wrote poetry and songs and I had just self-published a poetry book. After reading this book, Judith had an idea for a project to encourage seniors to contribute stories, poetry, recipes, etc. as a legacy for future generations. She contacted New York State Assemblywoman Dana Levenberg’s Communications Director, Acacia Mauriello, and Old Traditions, New Beginnings began under their auspices. Judith and I were co-contributors to this project which is still on-going today. I enjoyed working with her on this exciting endeavor and the many discussions and interactions that followed.

She was an intelligent person with a sharp mind who never stopped creating ideas and plans. I know she had many sleepless nights tossing things around in her head. The Old Traditions, New Beginnings project flourished with her guidance and input. In April of this year, for my 80th birthday, she arranged for me to be honored for my contributions to seniors. I received commendations and proclamations from the Town of Ossining, the Westchester County Board of Legislators and the New York State Senate and Assembly. This was a distinction I will cherish for the rest of my life.

Although a very private person, Judith’s enthusiasm never wavered. She was currently working on a new book. I am indebted to her for her friendship, ideas, wisdom, “let’s do this” spirit, and sound advice. I hope she continues to write and create – wherever she is right now. Rest in Peace, Judith.
