Thirteen is a very lucky number indeed for The Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze. A bucket list happening for area residents since 2005, the pumpkin-powered spectacle at Van Cortlandt Manor in Croton-on-Hudson returns with even more jaw-dropping arrangements than ever before. Visitors now come from all 50 states to see this display of more than 7,000 hand-carved pumpkins, so be sure to book tickets early.
Demand for tickets has been so high this year that Historic Hudson Valley has added five more dates to the event – it’s now running for a record 45 nights, through the Saturday after Thanksgiving! This year, you’ll gawk at the brand-new herd of dinosaurs, see an astounding jack o’lantern Statue of Liberty, and your head just might twirl at the sight of the 20-foot pumpkin carousel.
For those looking to add a little spook factor into the season, a stop by Horseman’s Hollow at Philipsburg Manor is on the agenda. Located right in the heart of Sleepy Hollow, this walk-through haunted adventure takes Washington Irving’s classic “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” to its darkest extremes. Visitors walk the trail of terror and discover scenes of a town driven mad by the Headless Horseman himself. The entertaining mayhem is recommended for ages 10 and up, as the elaborate costumes, award-winning makeup artists, and professional actors make this event all too real.
Speaking of Irving’s classic tale, no Halloween would be complete without Jonathan Kruk’s retelling of the ghost story. Irving’s “Legend” at the Old Dutch Church in Sleepy Hollow is a captivating performance, made complete with spine-tingling organ music by Jim Keyes.
