The spirit of generosity filled the Yorktown Police Department as the 2025 Act of Kindness drive concluded on March 13th, continuing the legacy of the late Captain Kenneth Sgroi.
This year’s drive saw an outpouring of support from the community, with substantial donations of food, toiletries, and monetary contributions benefiting local organizations. This year’s collection drive benefitted United for the Troops and the Yorktown Alliance for Safe Kids, who each received cash donations of $1,635 collected by the department.
The Yorktown Police Department spearheaded the collection drive in observance of Captain Kenneth Sgroi Act of Kindness Day, officially recognized on March 16th, the day Sgroi joined the department. Captain Sgroi, who passed away in 2023, was remembered for his dedication to the community and his unwavering commitment to service.
“Kenny was all about this town and the police department,” said Police Chief Robert Noble. “He and his wife Anne purchased a house in Yorktown and dedicated his life to raising a family.”
Both of the charities receiving cash donations operate in Yorktown. United for the Troops is a non-profit that ships essential items to deployed U.S. troops. The Yorktown Alliance for Safe Kids is dedicated to promoting healthy choices for young people.
The establishment of Captain Kenneth Sgroi Act of Kindness Day by the Town Board was a poignant tribute to the beloved officer, whose dedication to the Yorktown Police Department spanned nearly 14 years.
“It’s always a tragedy when you lose someone so dedicated and so young,” said Supervisor Ed Lachterman. “Every time there is a tragedy we look for signs from God. To see the Act of Kindness Day and to see our police department working within the community is really a great thing that comes out of this tragedy.”
Anne Sgroi, Captain Sgroi’s wife, expressed her gratitude for the ongoing support and the community’s commitment to honoring her late husband.
“A lot has changed in the past two years, but one thing that has remained constant is the support of Chief Noble, the Yorktown Police and Yorktown. Kenny would have done anything to help someone else,” said Anne Sgroi. “Thank you for all the amazing donations in honor of Kenny. I know the Yorktown Police will always be part of our family.”
