Tarrytown Volunteer Ambulance Corps Dedicates New Ambulance

The Tarrytown Volunteer Ambulance Corps dedicated its new ambulance on Sunday, October 6, 2024 at a ceremony at their headquarters. Reverend William Baker of Christ Church in Tarrytown blessed the new vehicle.

In addition to TVAC members, including Jill Swanson, TVAC captain, in attendance was Mayor Karen Brown, Deputy Mayor Becky McGovern, Trustee Thomas Mitchell, as well as TVAC directors Lauren De Sanctis, Dr. Lawrence Goldstein, Burton Hurvich, Ramon Kapoor, Hallie Swanson, and Alaric Young.

According to Lauren De Sanctis, Chairwoman of the TVAC Board of Directors, “We are thrilled to welcome this new Ford Ambulance to the fleet. It will be put to good use as we continue to provide quality medical care to the Greater Tarrytown community.”

“While the new ambulance will replace our oldest ambulance,” she continued, “we are keeping that older vehicle as a backup to ensure we always have two working vehicles and allow additional support to the Village. For example, all three ambulances are expected to be covering emergencies during the upcoming Halloween parade on October 26th.”

Some highlights of the new ambulance include:

  • More headroom allowing greater space to move and work inside the ambulance
  • More lights on the outside of the ambulance as well as all doors – this will allow better visibility for roadside emergencies
  • More efficient on-board oxygen system
  • New stretcher and power loader

The new stretcher is enhanced with features that include:

  • Better maneuverability to get into elevators and around tight corners
  • A wider mattress to accommodate larger patients
  • Lighting elements to allow better visibility in the dark

The cost of the new ambulance with the stretcher and radios was just over $300,000 which was funded partially with financing and a grant from the Phelps Community Foundation (PCF), a non-profit corporation registered in New York State.

Since 1967, the Tarrytown Volunteer Ambulance Corps has provided Emergency Medical Service to the community. Last year, they answered over 1400 calls. To date in 2024, they have responded to over 1000 calls.

De Sanctis noted that, “We appreciate the support we receive from the Village of Tarrytown. TVAC is an independent, state certified ambulance service managed by local volunteers for almost 50 years. Volunteers are always needed and welcome. TVAC provides the Training, courses, and uniforms.”
