Northwell Northern Westchester Hospital (NWH) and Northwell Phelps Hospital have received an ‘A’ – the highest rating – for hospital safety from The Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit organization committed to quality and safety in American health care. This recognition demonstrates the hospitals’ commitment to keeping patients safe from preventable harm and medical errors.
“An ‘A’ grade from Leapfrog not only demonstrates our commitment to patient safety but also recognizes the top-tier talent and culture of continuous innovation at both Northern Westchester and Phelps,” said Kevin Beiner, president of Northwell Health’s Western Market. “This recognition reflects the dedication of our teams at Northern Westchester and Phelps hospitals in delivering exceptional care, optimizing health outcomes and ensuring a safe environment for our patients.”
The Leapfrog Group assigns grades to U.S. hospitals twice yearly based on up to 30 safety measures, including preventable errors, injuries, and infections. Grades A, B, C, D, or F are determined by a scoring algorithm using survey data and publicly available information. Nearly 3,000 general acute-care hospitals receive these grades, helping patients assess each facility’s safety.
Leapfrog’s Hospital Safety Guide is the only rating program focused solely on preventable medical errors, infections and injuries that kill more than 500 patients a day in the United States. Leapfrog’s goal is to publicly report the patient safety and quality information it gathers to benefit consumers, purchasers and referring physicians to assist them in deciding where to seek care and direct patients.
Nine other Northwell hospitals also received an ‘A’ in the fall 2024 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade report.
