Northern Westchester Hospital (NWH) received a heartwarming gift: nearly 600 children’s books to brighten the days of its youngest patients. The donation includes 500 books from the Bedford-Armonk Rotary Club and another 90 from Sofia Fasano, an 11-year-old Westlake Middle School student with aspirations of becoming a pediatrician.

“She has a deep love of reading and she understood that sometimes kids in the hospital need something to take their mind off of why they’re here,” said Frank Fasano, Sofia’s father and a physician assistant for surgical services at Northern Westchester Hospital.

Sofia made the donation as part of a project for the Junior Honor Society at her school. “I hope that people take in the friendly message to give what you can to children in need,” she said. “I love reading and I wanted to share that with patients in the hospital where my dad works and my grandmother used to work and where me and my brother were born.”

Just minutes before Sofia and her grandmother dropped off their donation, the Bedford-Armonk Rotary Club delivered their annual contribution to the hospital, which includes both English and Spanish titles for all ages. This is their seventh year donating books to Northern Westchester Hospital.

The donated books from both parties will be available in the hospital’s emergency department, pediatric unit and ambulatory center, offering comfort and a sense of normalcy to children when they need it most.
