For the second year in a row, the website MoneyGeek has listed Yorktown as one of the safest small communities in the United States.
MoneyGeek placed Yorktown at #6 on its safest small communities list, based on a crime cost per capita of $57 in 2023. Yorktown was the only community in Westchester County to land in the list’s top 15.
The website calculated the average cost of crime in small towns and cities at $1,141 per capita in 2023. MoneyGeek defines a small town or city as a community with a population of 30,000 to 100,000 residents.
Yorktown Police Chief Robert Noble said that MoneyGeek’s analysis highlights the cost of policing nationwide.
“I cannot be prouder of my team. Yorktown taxpayers are receiving excellent value for their buck, and top-notch public safety service from their police department,” said Chief Noble. “We thank all in our community for their partnership and support.”
MoneyGeek analyzed crime statistics by quantifying the cost of crime and ranking small cities and towns nationwide. The data included violent crimes — such as murder, rape, and aggravated assault — and property crimes — such as burglaries and car theft.
MoneyGeek noted that small towns are not necessarily safer than bigger cities. Pine Bluff, Arkansas, the least-safe small city, had a 2023 per capita crime cost of $12,929 compared with New York City’s 2023 per capita cost of $1,407.
“This recognition by MoneyGeek highlights the outstanding work of our Yorktown Police Department and the strong sense of community among our residents,” said Yorktown Supervisor Ed Lachterman. “This designation as one of the safest small towns in the country is a testament to our commitment to public safety and the collaboration between law enforcement, local leaders, and citizens. Together, we’re making Yorktown a place where families can thrive with peace of mind.”
To rank the safest small cities and towns in the United States, MoneyGeek started with standardized crime statistics reported to the FBI. MoneyGeek then used population data to determine crime rates per 100,000 people.
