In a powerful display of solidarity and hope, hundreds of survivors, advocates, and community supporters gathered at the 4th Annual Shine the Light Solidarity Bridge Walk at the iconic Mario M. Cuomo Bridge on Thursday, October 16, 2025, marking a significant moment in the ongoing fight against domestic violence during Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM).
The walk, organized by the Center for Safety & Change and joined by numerous organizations—including local law enforcement, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. (R) Pi Iota Omega Chapter, AWAKE, Hope’s Door, Moms Demand Action, My Sisters’ Place, Pace Women’s Justice Center, Putnam Northern Westchester Women’s Resource Center, and notable survivor and actress April Hernandez Castillo—brought together community members from Rockland and Westchester counties to raise awareness, honor victims, and show unwavering support for survivors.
Participants began their walk on both sides of the bridge at 12:00 p.m., converging in the middle for a heartfelt ceremony dedicated to victims of domestic violence. Attendees wore purple—the color representing Domestic Violence Awareness—to demonstrate their solidarity and commitment to ending violence against women and children.
“Domestic violence affects 1 in 3 women worldwide and exposes countless children to trauma,” said Elizabeth Santiago, CEO of Center for Safety & Change. “This event is a powerful reminder that together, we can make a difference. Our mission is to educate, support, and advocate for justice.”
The event highlighted alarming statistics, including the CDC’s estimate that domestic violence results in over $727 million lost in workplace productivity annually, alongside nearly 8 million paid workdays missed each year due to abuse.
The community’s collective voice continues to echo the importance of action—learning, speaking out, and supporting victims.
