Community Housing Innovations Celebrates Housing Journeys at April 23 Gala

Community Housing Innovations (CHI) celebrated the resilient housing journey of hundreds of families and individuals who found a home, either from moving out of shelter or homeownership, at its Gala on April 23.

The black-tie event at the Surf Club on the Sound in New Rochelle featured dinner, dancing, and the moving stories of seven families who overcame obstacles to obtain their own homes, as well as the CHI team members who helped them.

“It was a moving evening not only celebrating housing success stories but the stories of CHI employees who made it possible for so many to experience the joy of having a home of their own,’’ said Ron Abad, CEO, Community Housing Innovation. “There was not a dry eye in the house as we heard these uplifting stories of resiliency, perseverance, love and sacrifice that we need to hear these days.’’

Stories like Chanda James Govan’s. The single mom recently moved into an apartment at Community Housing Innovations’ newly-opened building on Carpenter Avenue in the Bronx with her 18-year-old autistic son.

This year, CHI also honored individuals who made significant contributions to the community and embodied the spirit of service and dedication. Receiving the Champion of Champions Award was Joslyn Carter, LCSW, Administrator, NYC Department of Homeless Services, a dedicated leader with over 20 years of experience in social work and public service. As Administrator of New York City’s Department of Homeless Services (DHS), she oversees the nation’s largest municipal shelter system, serving thousands of individuals and families.
Tyré Robinson, Tarrytown Regional President for M&T Bank, accepted the Corporate Partner of the Year Award on behalf of the bank. M&T was honored for its longstanding commitment to community development and its generous support of affordable housing initiatives. The Upward Mobility Award was presented to first-time homeowner Chyna Hill, Associate Director of Annual Giving at Sarah Lawrence College, who participated in CHI’s Homeownership Program and closed on her first home on January 9, 2025.

CHI Controller Sherranda Harris was presented with the 2024 Employee of the Year Award.  Harris worked her way up in the organization, starting as a junior accountant in 2003. Throughout her tenure, she remained deeply committed to CHI’s mission of providing Housing Services to promote economic independence.
