Assemblymember MaryJane Shimsky this week honored Sleepy Hollow resident Lisa Kosan, President of the Community Food Pantry of Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow, at the New York State Legislative Women’s Caucus 2026 Women’s History Month Celebration.
The annual event, held in the Albany Room outside the State Capitol, recognizes outstanding women from across New York State who have made a meaningful impact in their communities. Inspired by this year’s theme for national Women’s History Month, “Leading the Change: Women Shaping a Sustainable Future,” Assemblymember Shimsky nominated Kosan for her tireless efforts to combat food insecurity and support families in need.
“Our food pantries fill a critical need for those struggling to afford the basic necessities—especially now, when the pressures to meet that demand are rapidly growing. Lisa Kosan brings exceptional dedication and know-how to this urgent mission,” said Assemblymember Shimsky. “The Community Food Pantry supports more than 1,000 people every month, providing them with nutritious food and the comfort of knowing their neighbors are there to help. Lives depend on organizations like this and the people who devote their time to them. Lisa exemplifies the spirit of Women’s History Month—lifting others up and strengthening our communities through service.”
The Community Food Pantry of Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow currently distributes about 18,000 pounds of nutritious food to more than 500 families each month. Kosan, a freelance writer and editor, joined the pantry shortly after the COVID-19 pandemic, when demand had doubled to 1,000 families per month. Current use of the pantry remains above pre-Covid levels, due to the impacts of inflation and other economic challenges on local residents, some of whom had their SNAP benefits disrupted or terminated under new federal rules.
“I am honored to be recognized alongside so many extraordinary women from across New York State,” said Kosan. “This work is truly a community effort, and I share this recognition with the dedicated volunteers, partners, and supporters who make it possible for us to help our neighbors.”
“Women like Lisa Kosan remind us that leadership comes in many forms, and that meaningful change often begins at the local level,” added Assemblymember Shimsky. “I am proud to honor her and grateful for her contributions to the Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown community.”
