Astorino to Announce Westchester S.T.E.M. Initiatives at Regeneron

Regneron Westchester Science and Engineering FairWestchester County Executive Robert P. Astorino will kick off the 13th annual Regeneron – Westchester Science and Engineering Fair (WESEF), where more than 350 students from 35 high schools will compete for scholarships and spots at the Intel International Science & Engineering Fair. Astorino will also announce the county’s STEM initiatives in partnership with the business community, the Westchester Office of Economic Development and the Westchester Youth Bureau, who are working to enhance science, technology, engineering and math education to further establish Westchester as New York’s Intellectual Capital. WESEF is sponsored by Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, Acorda Therapeutics and Entergy, among others. Sponsors have generously donated more than $100,000 for this year’s competition and awards.

Students will be showcasing their multi-year research science projects in a competitive venue featuring individual and team poster presentations. More than 250 local experts in the fields of life science, physical science, environmental studies, psychology and engineering will serve as judges. Thirteen top projects will win a trip to the Intel International Science & Engineering Fair, which is the larger and more global of the two Intel sponsored events (www.societyforscience.org/isef). Intel ISEF will be held in Phoenix in May and will bring together over 1,500 science fair winners from 60 countries. Three additional projects will win spots at the International Sustainable World Project Olympiad, which brings together over 700 students from over 60 countries whose projects have focused on sustainability in the areas of Energy, Environment and Engineering (www.isweeep.org).
