Lovely Calamity Productions Presents an Evening of Samuel Beckett in Tarrytown

Lovely Calamity Productions will present a double bill of Samuel Beckett’s most haunting one act plays: Krapp’s Last Tape and Footfalls.

This limited engagement will run for two nights only, Friday, March 20th and Saturday, March 21st, at Muddy Water Coffee & Cafe in Tarrytown.

The evening pairs two masterclasses in atmospheric storytelling that explore the rituals we use to tether ourselves to reality—or chain ourselves to the past.

In Krapp’s Last Tape, an aging man sits alone on his birthday, listening to tapes he recorded thirty years earlier. He doesn’t like what he hears. It is a darkly comedic look at the price of a life spent looking backwards and the bittersweet sting of recording one’s own “swan song.”

In Footfalls, May paces a narrow strip of light with metronomic precision, counting her steps, lost in her memories. She is carrying on a conversation with the disembodied voice of her mother who is lying down in the next room… or is she? A haunting (and possibly haunted) exploration of the way the past continues to reverberate in the present.

Why Beckett? Why Now?

“If the absurdity of the modern world has you down,” producer Cristina Noelle says, “there is no better playwright to help you laugh—and shudder—at the human condition than Samuel Beckett.”

And the performance space lends itself nicely to an evening of cozy introspection. “Muddy Water is such a wonderful venue,” Noelle explains. “It’s a pleasure to present Beckett’s visceral, internal worlds in a space that feels as immediate and intimate as the plays themselves.”
