Harmony Zhu

Friends of Music Concerts, celebrating 71 years of presenting the finest in professional chamber music, presents pianist Harmony Zhu in concert on Sunday, April 6, 3:00 p.m.

Performances are scheduled to take place at Sleepy Hollow High School’s Kusel Auditorium, 210 North Broadway, Sleepy Hollow, N.Y., with ample free parking and handicapped access. Tickets are $40 for adults, free for those age 18 and under, and available here.

A recipient of FOMC’s YCA Performance Award, this brilliant 19-year-old artist has been hailed as “a deeply musical soul and nimble technician [with] probing sensitivity.” (Chicago Tribune) She was First Prize winner of the 2021 YCA Susan Wadsworth International Auditions and a 2024 Gilmore Young Artist.

Her program on April 6 will consist of works by Frédéric Chopin, whom she has named as one of her favorite composers. “His music has always been extremely dear to me. It is so profound and noble, but it also really tears at your heart and resonates with the human experience on a deeply personal level,” she said.

Her program includes: Nocturne, Op. 27, No. 1; selected études; Mazurkas, Op. 33, No. 1-4; Scherzo, No. 4; Ballade No. 3 in A♭ major, Op. 47, Polonaise-Fantasy, Op. 61; Ballade No. 4.

Audience members are invited to meet the artist at a post-concert reception.

A Young Steinway Artist since age 10, Zhu has appeared as soloist with prominent orchestras worldwide, including the Philadelphia Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Detroit Symphony, Israel Philharmonic, under renowned conductors such as Leonard Slatkin, Marin Alsop and Yannick Nézet-Séguin.

Zhu opened the Aspen Music Festival’s 2024 season with a recital at Harris Concert Hall and has been a featured performer at the Ravinia and Verbier Festivals. She has also been featured on NBC’s The Ellen DeGeneres Show, NPR’s From the Top, CBS, and ABC, with her musical maturity, charisma, and bubbly personality captivating audiences wherever she performs.

At the Illinois Philharmonic a couple of seasons ago, Zhu, age 16, jumped in at 24-hour notice for Alexander Toradze, performing Prokofiev’s Concerto No. 3 under the baton of Stilian Kirov. “[She] came, played and conquered in a barn-storming rendition of Prokofiev’s knuckle-busting warhorse,” observed the Chicago Classical Review.
