Dows Lane Elementary School kindergartners dove into the colorful world of French artist Henri Matisse in Marisa Micolucci’s classes. Drawing inspiration from his works, the young artists explored pattern line painting and studied Matisse’s innovative art styles throughout his lifetime.
As a culminating activity to the unit, the kindergartners created their own paper cut-outs inspired by the large shape collages Matisse made. As courageous learners, they practiced scissor safety and the art of folding and cutting paper to bring their shapes to life.
“The kindergarten artists had fun being engaged citizens by using collage materials and the art elements line, shape and color to create their collage masterpieces,” Micolucci said. “We also read Jeanette Winter’s “Henri’s Scissors,” which taught the students that even when Matisse faced physical challenges in life, he persevered and found a new way to create by drawing with scissors.”
