Rivertown Film presents a documentary that is more like a dreamy experience on Wednesday, October 22nd. “River of the Dog’, a film by Carlos Gomez de la Espriella, is a journey into the heart of Venezuela’s central plains in the state of Guarico.
There, the isolated Espino community struggles to live in harmony with, and against, the forces of nature. Capturing a landscape where life depends on cycles of rain and drought, where ranchers, farmers and laborers face the unrelenting unpredictability of their environment. Using little dialogue or narration, the film becomes a meditation on resilience, ancestry, and the tenuous balance between humans and the natural world. The viewer is introduced to a place where the state’s presence is mostly absent and modern conveniences are scarce. Past and present co-exist, even as the villagers adapt to contemporary hardships.
The documentary will be screened at the Nyack Center ((South Broadway at Depew Avenue, entrance on South Broadway). There will be a post film discussion with director Gomez de la Espriella by Zoom and with Producer Belen Orsini in person, which will be moderated by Oscar Barretto-Gonzalez, Ph.D. Professor at St. Thomas Aquinas College. The evening is part of The Global Film Series at the Justice Institute of St. Thomas Acquinas College, honoring Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month.
Doors to the Nyack Center open at 7:30pm, and the film begins at 8pm. Tickets are $13/General Admission, $11/Students & Seniors, and $9/Rivertown Film Members More information can be found at rivertownfilm.org.
