Derek Anderson Named President of Putnam Hospital

Derek Anderson

Northwell Health announced the appointment of Derek Anderson as president of Northwell’s Putnam Hospital. Anderson will assume the role while continuing to serve as president of Northwell’s Northern Westchester Hospital, further strengthening collaboration and advancing high-quality care across the region.

“Derek’s blend of strategic vision, operational expertise and commitment to patient-centered care makes him exceptionally well-positioned to lead Putnam Hospital into its next phase of growth,” said Kevin Beiner, Northwell’s EVP and Chief Operating Officer. “Derek’s expanded role will strengthen collaboration between our teams, accelerate the sharing of best practices and ensure we continue providing outstanding care for patients throughout the region.”

A respected healthcare executive, Anderson, a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives, has led Northern Westchester Hospital since 2019, where he has driven significant clinical and operational advancements. Under his leadership, the hospital has earned a prestigious 5-star rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) for three consecutive years and achieved Magnet® recertification with distinction.

Anderson has overseen several key initiatives, including the introduction of cardiac catheterization and electrophysiology services, the launch of graduate medical education programs, and the implementation of the Epic electronic medical record system.

Anderson began his career with Northwell Health in 2009 as a financial and strategic planning analyst and later held progressive leadership roles at North Shore University Hospital, where he contributed to major capital and strategic projects.

“It is an honor to serve the Putnam Hospital community and build upon the remarkable work of Dr. Hirko and the dedicated team members, physicians and volunteers who make this hospital so special,” Anderson said. “Putnam Hospital has a strong history of serving its community with excellence and compassion. I look forward to listening, learning and working alongside our teams to strengthen services, expand access to care and ensure we continue meeting the evolving needs of the patients and communities we serve.”

Putnam Hospital is a 164-bed acute care hospital providing medical, surgical, psychiatric and 24-hour emergency services. It was established in 1964 and is the only hospital in Putnam County, serving Putnam, Northern Westchester and Southern Dutchess counties.

Honoring Dr. Mark Hirko’s Leadership

Anderson succeeds Mark Hirko, MD, who recently retired following nine years of dedicated service to the organization.

A vascular surgeon and accomplished healthcare leader, Dr. Hirko joined Health Quest Medical Practice in 2017 as assistant vice president of surgical services and medical specialties.

In 2019, he was appointed president of Sharon Hospital and later expanded his responsibilities to include Putnam Hospital following the formation of Nuvance Health. In 2022, Dr. Hirko assumed full-time, onsite leadership at Putnam Hospital, where he helped drive transformative growth initiatives.
