Student government representatives from Washington Irving Intermediate School counted 1,067 pairs of socks for the homeless donated by teachers, students, administrators and staff members from the Public Schools of the Tarrytowns during October’s Socktober Drive.
Librarian Kerri DiLascio organized the Socktober event inspired by a nationwide movement that responds to the fact that socks and underwear are the least donated items for people in need.
The socks were distributed by Midnight Run and Project S.H.A.R.E in time for Thanksgiving.
“Imagine if you don’t have socks,” said fourth grade student Niva Pandya. “It would be so unbearable.”
Classmate Iris Griffin agreed, “I feel like [those receiving the socks] are going to be very happy and grateful.”
