History offers reassurance: when ATMs arrived in the 1990s, experts predicted bank tellers would disappear. Instead, teller numbers increased as ATMs reduced costs, allowing more branches. Tellers shifted from routine transactions to relationship-building and complex services.

Similarly, AI may transform therapists’ roles rather than replace them. Instead of psychoeducation or simple coping strategies—tasks AI handles well—therapists could focus on complex trauma, relationship dynamics, and irreplaceable human connection.

For now, AI platforms offer immediate, judgment-free support that traditional care can’t match. But they also carry risks measured in tragedy and statistics. The healthiest path forward involves both: AI for accessibility and crisis de-escalation; human therapists for complex care and clinical judgment.
