During the first week of March “The New NY Bridge” held an Employment Information Forum in Rockland County and in Tarrytown at the Westchester Marriott. Representatives from the NYS Department of Labor, the NYS Thruway Authority and the Tappan Zee Constructors Consortium had job seekers filling out registration forms, listening to speakers about the “when, where and how” aspects of working in any number of bridge related support services.
The Constructors Consortium is comprised of Fluor, American Bridge, Granite and Taylor Brothers . One eager and former local news broadcaster impressed on everyone that “this bridge” has billions of dollars in surety bonds ensuring that there will be no default during construction and that the current TZB will remain in use for 3-3 ½ years while the new bridge is being built. It will then be dismantled.
In speaking with a representative from the NYS Department of Labor she clarified that the number of potential job openings would be slightly over 1,000 and not in the tens of thousands as some had projected. Positions listed on one of the registration forms were Program Management, Administration, Engineering, Construction and Maintenance. 2014 is the projection for most ancillary jobs to begin according to the representative.
