Third graders at Dows Lane Elementary School collaborated with their peers to enhance their problem-solving abilities, pattern recognition and spatial reasoning skills with an interactive activity in Joan Burns’ classroom.

They were challenged to complete a pattern-matching puzzle game, with difficulty levels ranging from one to four. Throughout the activity, many demonstrated perseverance, teamwork and a willingness to take on challenges as they developed their skills.

“I was proud of their persistence and ability to think flexibly when the patterns became more challenging,” Burns said. “Students who struggle with reading word problems or using computational math strategies often feel successful with tasks that involve spatial recognition, critical thinking and persistence. I was proud and impressed with my students working cooperatively and communicating effectively throughout the activity.”

The activity aligned seamlessly with the district’s Portrait of a Graduate, which emphasizes cultivating courageous learners, effective communicators, engaged citizens and self-aware individuals.
